Speed and mobile
Most shoppers arrive on a phone, and they leave quickly if a page is slow. Backline is built to be fast and to adapt to every screen out of the box, so a well-run store starts on strong footing. Your part is mostly to avoid the few things that slow any store down.
Mobile comes first
Section titled “Mobile comes first”More than half of all Shopify sales happen on phones, so it is worth seeing your store the way most shoppers do. Preview each page on a phone, or narrow your browser window, and check that:
- Your header menu is easy to tap.
- Images and text sit comfortably with no side-scrolling.
- Your most important buttons are easy to reach with a thumb.
The theme handles the layout for you, so a quick look on a small screen is usually all you need. If something sits tighter or looser than you want, adjust it in Layout and spacing rather than working around it in your content.
Keep your store fast
Section titled “Keep your store fast”Shopify already does the heavy lifting. It serves your store from a global network and caches files so repeat visits load quickly. A few habits keep things speedy:
- Start from high-quality images and let Shopify size them. You do not need to compress by hand, but avoid dropping in enormous files where a normal photo would do.
- Be choosy with apps. Every app you install can add code to your storefront. Keep the ones that earn their place, and remove those you no longer use.
- Do not overload a single page. A homepage with a focused set of sections loads faster, and reads more clearly, than one with everything stacked on it.
Build on a light foundation
Section titled “Build on a light foundation”Backline is written in plain browser code. There is no extra framework stacked on top and no build machinery to load before your products can appear, so the theme’s own share of each page stays small and your images, apps, and tracking get the room instead. Two things follow from that:
- Your store keeps working when scripts do not. Menus, product options, add to cart, filtering, and search are all built to work with JavaScript switched off, so a shopper on a patchy connection or a restricted device can still browse and buy while everything else catches up.
- Your theme style is not a speed decision. Lathe, Patchbay, Skep, Lapidary, and Volm run on the same underlying code, so you can pick the look you want on its own merits. See Theme styles.
Turn motion down when it suits you
Section titled “Turn motion down when it suits you”Movement costs a little loading time and a lot of attention. If a page feels busy, or many of your shoppers are on older phones, open Theme settings → Animations and step the motion level down to Subtle, or set it to None for a completely still store. Your layout stays exactly as it is. Animation settings covers what each effect does, and every effect already respects a visitor’s own reduce-motion preference.
A calm page is a fast page
Section titled “A calm page is a fast page”The habits that keep a store fast are the same ones that make it feel considered: a clear homepage, sharp but sensible images, and only the apps you truly need. Speed is less a separate task than a side effect of a tidy store.
