Typography

Type sets the tone of your store before anyone reads a word. Backline gives you three fonts to work with and a set of controls for size, spacing, and letter case, all in one place. You can change as little or as much as you like: every theme style already arrives with its type balanced, so small adjustments are usually all it takes.

  • The heading font carries the personality. It appears in titles and short, high-impact lines.
  • The body font carries everything else. Its job is to stay comfortable across long paragraphs and small screens.
  • The accent font handles captions, small labels, and badges. Matching it to your body font keeps those details quiet, while a monospaced face gives them a technical edge.

A dependable approach is one characterful heading font paired with one calm, highly readable body font, with the accent font following the body. That contrast is what makes a page feel designed rather than plain.

  1. In the theme editor, open Theme settings → Typography.
  2. Choose your heading, body, and accent fonts from the Shopify font library.
  3. Adjust the base text size if you want a larger or a more compact feel.

Rather than resizing text style by text style, start with the two scale controls. Heading scale multiplies every headline in the store together, and Body scale does the same for paragraphs and small text. Both run from 85% to 125%, so a few points in either direction shifts the whole store from bolder to quieter without breaking the proportions between sizes.

When you do want finer control, each text style has its own size in pixels: hero headlines, page titles, section headings, body text, and prices. Sensible ranges keep every choice usable, and line height is adjustable separately for headings and for body copy. Typography settings lists every range and default.

  • Body text that is a touch larger is kinder on the eyes than text that runs small.
  • Very thin weights can be hard to read on phones. Favor regular and medium weights for paragraphs.
  • Let headings breathe. The theme already gives them room, so you rarely need to adjust spacing yourself.

These smaller controls are where a store starts to feel finished:

  • Letter case can be set independently for headings and for captions and labels. Uppercase suits short, punchy headlines and small labels; leave longer headlines in normal case so they stay easy to scan.
  • Letter spacing is adjustable for headings, for captions and labels, and for numerals. Headings usually want letters drawn slightly together, while small uppercase labels want them opened up so they read as deliberate.
  • Price typeface lets prices follow either your heading font or your body font. If your heading font is a display face, switch prices to the body font so numerals line up evenly.
  • Italic accents adds a soft editorial touch to labels, or to labels and body text together. Preview a product page before choosing the wider option.

Each theme style ships with a font pairing chosen to suit its mood, so the starting point is already a good one. When you do make a change, change one font at a time and preview it, so you always know which choice made the difference. Check a storytelling section and a media section as you go, since those carry your largest headlines.
