SEO essentials

Search engine optimization sounds technical, but most of what matters is plain writing done consistently. Backline gives you a fast, cleanly built storefront, which is a strong foundation on its own. These habits build on it.

Write a good title and description for each page

Section titled “Write a good title and description for each page”

When your store shows up in search results, two pieces of text do the heavy lifting: the title and the description. Shopify lets you set both for every product, collection, page, and blog post, in the Search engine listing section when you edit them.

  • Title: make it unique and descriptive, and put your most important words near the start. Aim for about 60 characters so it does not get cut off in results.
  • Description: write one clear, honest sentence or two about the page, in plain language. Around 160 characters is the sweet spot.

Add short alt text to your images in Shopify. It helps shoppers who use a screen reader, and it gives search engines another way to understand your page. Describe what is actually in the image in a readable phrase, and keep it under about 125 characters.

  • Use clear, descriptive names for your products and collections. The name becomes part of the web address, which helps.
  • Give each page one clear heading and a logical order of sub-headings. The theme already styles these for you.
  • Link between related pages, such as from a blog post to the product it talks about. Good internal links help shoppers and search engines find their way around.

SEO is a slow, compounding effort, not a one-time switch. Publish useful pages, describe them honestly, and keep your store fast and tidy. The results build quietly over the following weeks and months.
